Ah. New Spring is one of the books I didn't read. I agree that rewriting them to have maintained a long term romantic relationship is more satisfying than "lesbian 'til graduation". The latter derives from people making choices from sharply limited alternatives. This portrayal represents free choices made repeatedly.
