"Service Engine" light - BOTH cars!
Earlier this week the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came back on in our Nissan Xterra... then went away when I cleaned and tightened the gas cap. Then our BMW got a SERVICE ENGINE SOON light, too— accompanied by an engine trouble indicator and a partial loss of power. The BMW doesn't screw around with warning lights. It's got several dozen of them...and they all mean different bad things. And they're hieroglyphics. There are literally 5 or 6 Rosetta Stone pages in the manual to help you decode them all.
The trouble lights that came on in the BMW didn't terribly surprise us. We had the car in the shop a month ago to address that issue plus a few others. The shop, an independent specialty shop, fixed the other issues (A/C recharge and wheel alignment) but advised us that this particular engine issue should be covered for free at the dealer under a factory service bulletin. Hawk made an appointment with the dealership near her office and dropped the car off Thursday morning.
This seems like a story that's going to have a happy ending, right? Car trouble that gets fixed for free under a special warranty, right? Uh... not so fast. First there'd be bad news, then really bad news. 😨
