I'd feel bad for Fabio except he was a terrible department head, a person who exemplified the Peter Principle. ...Actually, he was more like an example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. He fancied himself a brilliant technologist while in reality he was just a politician with an unreasonable opinion of himself. Within his department he rewarded whoever wrote status reports that made things look best. With minimal ability to understand what was real or not that meant he culled in favor of dishonest yes-men, driving out smart, technologically capable people.
