GoT S6E10: Who is Jon Snow? Answer.
A few blogs ago I wrote, Who is Jon Snow? A Guess. That was based on a clue in S6E4. Well, just six episodes later it's answered pretty clearly in S6E10. Spoilers after the cut.
Note, these are book spoilers as the scene discussed below has not been published in the books yet (though I've been told that way more hints have been given there than in the series).
Long story short, my earlier guess was right. Jon Snow is the child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him Ned's nephew, not his bastard son— and, more importantly, a claimant to the Iron Throne as one of two surviving members of House Targaryen.
The final puzzle piece to confirm this for us viewer, at least, comes in S6E10 when Bran Stark sees another vision of the past with his ability as the Three Eyed Raven. He returns to the scene of a keep on the borderlands where his father, Ned Stark, and his party had just bested 2 distinguished warriors guarding it. Ned strides up the steps outside the keep as we can hear a woman in distress calling from within.
Inside, Ned finds a bloodied woman lying in bed. There are two servants with her. The injured woman is his sister, Lyanna, who's just had an extremely difficult birth. She shows Ned her baby and asks him to protect it. The baby has dark eyes, just like Jon's, and the camera fades from a close-up of the infant to a close-up of current day Jon Snow.
Of course, virtually nobody else still alive in the series knows this yet— including Jon himself.
