I'm not sure what the prevalence of cats as pets is in New Zealand. I expect that if there were a lot of pet cats there'd be concern socialized about keeping them indoors. New Zealand's native animals are vulnerable to predators because there are so few native predators. That's a big reason why there are 4 species of flightless birds unique to New Zealand, including the eponymous kiwi.
