I am amused/annoyed by your description of tracks running right past your house and still having to drive to get to the station. It feels a bit like how I have to go a staggering amount out of my way to u-turn into my nearest green line station (if I arrive at the tracks -on the other side of the chain-link fence- and can see a train, I will not be able to reach the station entrance and double back to the platform in time to catch it)
I'm glad your friend is doing well, and always happy when people get to ride nice trains.
