Diversity Day. Yay?
May. 20th, 2022 08:28 am I have the day off from work today. It's Diversity Day. That's my employer's name for it, anyway. Officially today tomorrow is the United Nations' World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. It's on May 21 every year. The 21st is a Saturday this year, so my company is observing it a day early.
If you're like, "Whuh?" I don't blame you. I don't think anyone has heard of that holiday. And my company has once again done a poor job of helping employees understand it. They sent out one little message, not well written, months ago, on a channel few people actively pay attention to. And what happens when you try researching it yourself? As I noted last year, a web search for "diversity day" turns up satire about corporate diversity & inclusion (D&I) programs for the top 10/10 hits.
The company was like, "You can use your time off to support diversity events!!" I'm like, Uh, no, there are no diversity events today. No one else is celebrating today. No one else even knows about today. Today— or even tomorrow— is not a recognized holiday except in some show-vote resolution the UN passed 20+ years ago.
Let me be clear about something: I support D&I in the workplace. What I do not support is an implementation of it so poor it's barely more than lip service and is only a step or two away from actively mocking D&I.
So, how will I celebrate on my day off? Normally I'd travel on a 3-day weekend, but since nobody else actually has the day off, most particularly my spouse, that's not interesting. I'm basically just going to stay home today. I'm taking it easy this morning, then I'll change the oil in one of our cars, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and... probably just sit around more after that.
