As someone who took several years to find my post-college footing, being young enough to have coverage through my parents was _essential_ to my ability to survive the six months at Dunkin Donuts (category: working poor), the summer I paid rent with every odd job I could find (category: entrepreneur), and the 3.5 years I spent substitute teaching (category: independent contractor, essentially) before finally landing a full-time teaching job.

I think I actually wound up fully un-insured for 2-3 months --my birthday's in August, and I didn't actually start at the Private School until November (due to shenanigans). Turns out that's illegal in Massachusetts, you have to have insurance at all times, and I paid hefty on my state taxes for the mistake.
