Sick from SKO
Mar. 17th, 2022 12:48 pmLast week my company held its annual sales kick-off (SKO) conference in Las Vegas. I weighed whether or not to attend in person as early as January, when the event and its basic parameters were announced. A few days prior to travel I considered it again, acknowledging that even though Covid rates had dropped significantly since their late January peak it could be a superspreader event. Indeed, masks and other precautions were scarcely seen in Vegas. It's little surprise, then, that I got sick from exposure on this trip. 😰
Fortunately my sickness is not Covid-19, at least as far as I can tell. It's just a cold. I had a sore throat and congestion by Sunday night. At first I thought it was dry, dirty air. My symptoms lightened a bit Monday evening once we got home, reinforcing that hypothesis. But then Monday night into Tuesday morning my head congestion and sinus pressure increased.
Tuesday morning I found that at least one of my colleagues at SKO had gotten Covid-19. "Ray" told us he felt sick Saturday morning, took a home test, got a positive result from it, then went to an urgent care clinic Saturday afternoon for a PCR test. The PCR results came back Monday: also positive.
I don't know whether Ray was exposed prior to the SKO and was incubating it while there, or was exposed there and incubated quickly; but either way, I was exposed because Ray is an immediate colleague and we interacted with many of the same people. I took a quick test right away Tuesday morning after seeing his alert. Fortunately my test result was negative.
Here it is Thursday afternoon and this still seems like it's just a cold. It feels almost self delusional to say/write "It's just a cold". Sadly that's where we're at with all the politicized denial around Covid-19. But colds are still a thing. And my symptoms have been mild and following the sequence of what I expect from a garden variety cold. Just to be safe, though, I'll take another Covid-19 test soon.
