One-Day Stomach Bug?
Jan. 18th, 2024 08:11 amI started feeling ill yesterday afternoon. Well, actually, it started in the morning. I had diarrhea. "No biggie," I thought. I took a pill for it. But after lunch I was still feeling bloated. Then by 2pm I was feeling run-down tired. "Maybe it's because I've had 4 customer meetings today and I started before 8am," I figured. I took a break between meetings from 2:30 to 3:30. But then I had the chills. I still had one more customer meeting so I put on a fleece and zipped it up. The warmth felt good, and I made it through my meeting with aplomb. But then I crashed. I went to lie down in bed until Hawk came home from work.
I'm not sure if I slept while I was lying down, though that was my intent. I think I may have drifted off for a few minutes at a time. But mostly my mind was racing. At least I was bending it toward creative thoughts, coming up with ideas for my D&D game— yes, there's at least one more session to go, and we're playing this Friday evening. But I still had the chills. And I ached and was weak. That part became clear when I got up to get dressed and go downstairs for dinner. I almost fell over.
I made myself a simple dinner around 7. After that I contemplated what to do for the evening. I could do something else like watch TV or play a board game with Hawk. But I was concerned I wouldn't have the focus to enjoy them for more than about 10 minutes,. I chose instead to veg in front of my computer for about 15 minutes then went to bed early.
In this case my "sleep it off" approach seems to have worked. I awoke with my 6:45am alarm today feeling better. Oh, I swatted the snooze button a few times still, but today I'm feeling 95%.
My best guess about what got me sick is a mild case of food poisoning from dinner Wednesday night. I had ground beef kabobs at a restaurant. I suspect that, in particular, because ground beef dishes are more susceptible to picking up bacteria. If the person preparing the raw mixture didn't have clean gloves, or if the bowls weren't clean, or if the raw mixture wasn't kept at proper temperature controls during the day... boom. Sick.
