I Hate Doordash Drivers

I'm coming to hate drivers for Doordash and other delivery services. They act like doing their job is more important than everyone else at the store where they're picking things up. They park in handicap spaces and fire lanes. In the store, they walk around the line of customers waiting and wave their phones at the cashier, expecting immediate service.

When this happened the other day I was happy to see the cashier tell the Doordasher to wait his turn. I was the customer at the register, and I was in the middle of giving the cashier my member number to get a discount. I quickly got the sense the cashier was as miffed at the interruption as I was, as the cashier continued the amiable discussion he and I were having about the items I was buying. We kept on chatting as if no one was waiting.

Screw the impatient dashers.

A while back, I had stopped in Mickey D's for some quasi-food-like-substance. There was a Dasher literally having a tantrum at the counter because something about the order he was supposed to pick up was wrong. Not quite flailing-around-on-the-ground tantrum, but not far from it. Screaming, hitting the counter, all of that.

He finally left, without the order.

I haven't seen that kind of childish behavior around here, though one curiosity around here is that a lot of Doordash drivers (note I'm saying "Doordash" for simplicity; this includes all third-party delivery services) don't speak English— or Spanish. They communicate with cashiers by grunting and pointing at their phones where the order is displayed. This makes for an amusing, caveman-like pantomime when the driver has inaccurate expectations about what they'll be given.

For example, at a few quick-service restaurants I enjoy eating at, the only drink machines are in the dining room. When an order includes drinks, the drivers have to fill the drinks themselves. So many drivers either don't grasp this, or make a scene— with grunts and exaggerated gestures toward their phones— because they don't want to have to do extra work.
