canyonwalkerAfter our drive/hike to Robb's Hut atop a nearly 7,000' peak we discussed what to do next. Actually I was the only one to hike to the top of the peak; Hawk waited in the car at the locked gate 1/2 mile down from the top. She'd been up half the night with stomach pains (*not exactly stomach but I'll leave it at that for simplicity) and ran out of energy after our hike at Bassi Falls. Yes, hiking Bassi Falls was an act of vengeance— one that her body fought back against. It's like, "If I can't get you with a torn muscle I'mma get you with extreme GI pain."
While we evaluated whether we had enough time and energy to do one more hike in the area we temporized with visiting a little set of waterfalls off the side of the road.
I believe this is Tells Creek— or at least that's my best guess from the beautiful but too often misleading SMUD map. I made the photo above from the edge of the road bridge over the creek. Hawk picked her way down the embankment and hiked under the bridge. She didn't have enough energy to scramble up the rocks to stand by one of those alluring pools in the picture.
Once we were both back at the car we decided discretion would be the better part of valor. Not only was Hawk very iffy on the prospect of doing another hike, but I figured that if we drove over to Horsetail Falls for even a short hike (it's maybe a 1.5 mile loop IIRC) it'd push back our arrival at the night's hotel by over 2 hours. Yes, that was our Saturday Night Halfway. We decided getting in at, say, 7:30pm was preferable to arriving at 10— especially with another full day planned for Sunday.
