Image stabilization (IS) technology has been around in the interchangeable lens camera (ILC) market for several years now. First it was the ILC lenses gaining optical IS, then the bodies gaining in-body IS. My 3 main lenses all have IS. A few older lenses I own, which basically sit on my shelf now, don't. IS in the ILC world absolutely works. It doesn't remove all camera shake in low-light settings, of course, but it does make it totally reasonable to take hand-held pictures at, say, 1/30 sec with high confidence of getting an unblurred picture, and shooting as slow as, say, 1/4 sec with about a 25% chance of getting a good pic. Totally freehand, no IS, you'd have basically no chance.
