Dawsonville - Friday, 11 Apr 2025, 8am
We got to our hotel in Dawsonville, GA around 6pm yesterday. It had been a long day after driving over 300 miles across the state to hike Amicalola Falls. Fortunately it was only 20 miles or so from there back to Dawsonville. All in, it was 358 miles of driving for the day.
We ditched our bags in the hotel room and turned right around to go out for dinner. We were hungry. We picked a Mexican restaurant... partly because it had good reviews and partly because Mexican cuisine means instant food gratification in the form of chips and salsa. 😅
I mentioned in one of those previous blogs that it rained Thursday afternoon as we drove to the falls. Fortunately it cleared up just before we got there. We had pretty nice weather for hiking. We expected that was it for bad weather for the day... but while we were eating dinner it hailed outside. Then, when we went shopping for a few groceries for the room, it hailed again. Plus, there was thunder and lightning.
The violent weather continued well into the evening after we got back to our room. It's a good thing we didn't have our hearts set on using the hotel's outdoor pool. It was closed for the season anyway. And though we would've used the hell out of a hot tub if there were one, there wasn't. So we'd already gotten through the disappointment of not being able to soak. 🤣
This morning the weather is clear and cold. It should warm up to the low 60s around here after midday. That's not the low 80s like we had early in the week but it's better for hiking. And the overnight rain means there should be water flowing in all the waterfalls we aim to visit.
