canyonwalker: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Travel! (planes trains and automobiles)
As hawk and I wrapped up our trip to Spokane & the Inland Northwest a little over a week ago we were already discussing going back— as soon as this weekend! Indeed I started shopping for flights while on the flight home. Later that night I reserved a rental car and the next day I booked flights for Memorial Day weekend.

While we had our flights and rental car booked by Monday last week we didn't book our hotels until Friday. That's because it took several days to figure our exactly where we wanted to go. Yes, we committed to the trip before planning all the details! But prices were rising and we trusted there would be plenty of things we could do. After all, planning the previous trip involved many decisions about narrowing down a large set of promising things to an itinerary we could manage in 72 hours. Now it's almost time for Another 72 Hours! 😅

We've had the same box of salt in our kitchen for a long time. It finally ran out last week.

Salt. We don't buy it often.... [May 2021]

We don't use salt very much. Hawk is sensitive to the flavor and prefers not to use any at all. I use it sparingly myself. Especially this plain salt. For seasoning food, like a steak I'm not adding salt to via ingredients such as soy sauce in a marinade, I use pink sea salt. It has a richer, more rounded flavor. This plain salt I use only for salting water to boil pasta and in baking.

So, how old is this box we just finished? I looked for the expiry date to see....

Salt. Our last box lasted almost 24 years! [May 2021]

Better yet, I found a manufacturing date. The salt we just finished was packaged in 1997. We owned this box of salt for almost 24 years.

"Maybe I'll buy a smaller box next," I thought, not wanting to pay for more salt than I may use in my lifetime. But at the store today I found this size is the cheapest. $0.99 for the store brand. Smaller packages are only for fancy salt, and they cost 4x as much for a fraction of the size.
