24 Years of Salt

We've had the same box of salt in our kitchen for a long time. It finally ran out last week.

We don't use salt very much. Hawk is sensitive to the flavor and prefers not to use any at all. I use it sparingly myself. Especially this plain salt. For seasoning food, like a steak I'm not adding salt to via ingredients such as soy sauce in a marinade, I use pink sea salt. It has a richer, more rounded flavor. This plain salt I use only for salting water to boil pasta and in baking.
So, how old is this box we just finished? I looked for the expiry date to see....

Better yet, I found a manufacturing date. The salt we just finished was packaged in 1997. We owned this box of salt for almost 24 years.
"Maybe I'll buy a smaller box next," I thought, not wanting to pay for more salt than I may use in my lifetime. But at the store today I found this size is the cheapest. $0.99 for the store brand. Smaller packages are only for fancy salt, and they cost 4x as much for a fraction of the size.

We cooked dinner together, and he was wowed at the size of our spice collection... especially how many jars we keep handy, next to the stove, not squirreled away in a cabinet. "Most guys I know just own salt and pepper," he remarked.
