Regretting Staying Home
Jul. 2nd, 2021 02:50 pmI'm reminded today of a weekend years ago when I considered driving to Atlanta to meet with a bunch of net.friends. "It'll be an 8 hour drive each way," I reasoned. "That's too much driving just to hang with friends for a day and a half." I chose not to go. I figured I could find more enjoyable ways to spend the weekend at home without spending 16 hours on the road. Well, I was wrong. Friday night was fun (dinner and movie with friends) but by Saturday 10:30am I was bored, having already exhausted everything I could think to do for the weekend. I kicked myself for choosing to stay home.
Today I'm kind of kicking myself again. My plan was to be out hiking today in the mountains of the Inland Northwest, with more hiking in the mountains and to waterfalls over the next few days. But instead I'm home for the weekend.
We canceled our trip to the Inland Northwest Tuesday over concerns about the scorching heat in the region. Yes, it is hot out there, though the forecast today and for the next few days is slightly cooler than the forecast was on Tuesday. But mostly my regret is because I'm finding it hard to schedule a replacement trip.
"We'll just rebook the trip for a few weeks later," Hawk and I agreed when we made the no-go decision on Tuesday. All of our bookings were refundable, no fees, so cancelling was easy. But when we went to rebook... flights were easy, hotels were okay, but rental cars were a clusterfuck. Most agencies are showing zero inventory right now. The few who are, are asking $200++/day. We'd like to go but we're not willing to pay $800, $1000, or more for a rental car on a 3-4 day trip!
