Mt. Cook National Park, NZ - Sun, 14 Apr 2024, 9:50am

Yesterday after hiking the Hooker Valley trail we were pretty tired. And hungry. And wet. We peeled off our wet clothes in the room, taking care to hang everything so that it'd dry out by this morning. Hawk showered before dinner, I waited until after.

For dinner we drove to a small lodge grill a few blocks away. We both ordered pizzas as that was almost the only appetizing thing on the menu. The pizzas weren't great.... They were kind of like something straight out of a Chef Boyardee boxed mix. But we had some serious taste amplification going so we wolfed them down.

I was in bed ready to fall asleep around 8 if not before. I've gone to bed early most nights this week. It's partly how I'm dealing with the timezone change (19 hours) and partly how I'm timing my schedule to maximize daylight hours for doing outdoors things.

Speaking of the great outdoors, we had such a good time idling by our balcony overlooking Mt. Cook yesterday that we decided to do it again.

Another beautiful day at Mt. Cook in New Zealand (Apr 2024)

Though this time we've lazed through the morning hours by the windows not so much to enjoy the view— or the non-view as the photo above shows— as to wait out the weather hoping it would get better for hiking. See, the point of hiking for me isn't the exercise, it's to see the beauty. And in conditions like this picture shows, well, there's little to see. Waterfalls? Snow-capped mountains? The tallest peak within 5,000 miles? They're all literally in this picture, you just can't see them. 😡

Well, in the few hours we've been relaxing by the windows, weather conditions have gotten a bit better. The clouds have lifted... to about 1,000 feet above the valley floor. The hotel's checkout time of 10am is almost here, so we've packed our bags to get rolling.

We tried waiting out the weather this morning before starting our hike on Red Tarns trail at Mt. Cook National Park. The plan worked; the weather got better. At least for a little while....

Starting up the trail to Red Tarns (Apr 2024)

This photo shows the view out across the valley as we crossed a footbridge to where the trail begins in earnest. Up to this point it's a literal walk in the park: a paved path, flowers on the side, even bunnies in the grass. On the other side of this bridge it's relentless up, up, up the mountain.

Alas while the weather started to look like it might continue clearing up, the sky in the photo above is about the best we saw all day. And after we started the trail the clouds closed back up and even descended lower. Here's some video that shows the story:

By the way, a tarn is a mountain pond. This trail leads up to a pocket basin where there are a few tarns with amazing views— on clear days. You can see what this day offered in the video above. The ponds are named Red Tarns because of a copper colored pondweed that grows there.

Queenstown, NZ - Sun, 14 Apr 2024, 10pm

After finishing our hike to Red Tarns in Mt. Cook National Park we grabbed a late lunch at the hotel cafe. It was another pizza— though a different pizza (and from a different place) from the day before. It was... slightly better... but still helped by taste amplification from being so hungry. By the time we finished it was almost 4pm so we hit the road back to Queenstown. We're staying in a hotel near the airport tonight to catch a flight tomorrow morning to Wellington.

The drive down to Queenstown was reasonable. It was just under 260km (162 miles) and took about 3 hours. This drive brings my total driving distance this past week to 1,650km— more than 1,000 miles! I'll share my observations about driving in New Zealand in another blog.

We made a few stops along the way for leg stretching. After two strenuous hikes the past few days my legs are stiff. One interesting stop was Wrinkly Ram.

Monument to merino sheep in Omarama, NZ (Apr 2024)

The town of Omarama, NZ has this "tribute" (their words, on the plaque) to merino sheep on the main corner. These sheep, known for their fine wool, have been farmed there since 1858.
