canyonwalker: Winter is Coming (Game of Thrones) (game of thrones)

In Game of Thrones S6E2 a major plot twist happens that I think a lot of us saw coming a mile away. It was one of those "When, not If" things. Spoilers after the cut.

Jon Snow is raised from the dead. ...No, not by the Night King, but by Melisandre the Red. He was dead for 2 episodes.

The reason I say many of us viewers saw that coming a mile off is three-fold. First, Jon is a major viewpoint character. Sure, George R. R. Martin has no problem killing off viewpoint characters, but being a major character set Jon up for the next two points. We know that priests of the Lord of Light are able to bring people back from the dead— if their god has a purpose for it. That was shown with Thoros of Myr bringing back Beric Dondarrion from the dead an unheard-of five times in an earlier season. And we saw through Melisandre's POV in season 5 that she sees Jon having a purpose in her god's plans.

It's interesting that Melisandre goes through a crisis of faith before raising Jon. She both scoffed and marveled at what she saw fellow priest Thoros do. Scoffed, because she considered Thoros nowhere near as dedicated to the faith as her. Thoros countered that it wasn't his power that brought Beric back so many times; it was their god's power. Melisandre doubted her own power after seeing how the actions she thought the Lord of Light guided her to do resulted in total defeat for Stannis Baratheon. In praying for Jon's revival she was basically going through the motions... which, ironically, is what Thoros said he did the first time he revived Beric. There's nothing like working an actual miracle to restore a priest's faith.
