More Code Red (An Improvement!)
Mar. 3rd, 2021 07:47 amAnother week, another Covid statistics update— and another one better than before. In California a few more counties have dropped out of Code Purple, the worst risk tier, and are now only Code Red.

The data and image are from https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/.
The counties in the red tier or lower now comprise nearly 13% of the state population. This is an increase from last week, when it was just 4%. The biggest single change in the numbers is Santa Clara County, my home and otherwise known as Silicon Valley.
The change to Code Red brings small but noticeable loosening in health codes. And the county health officer says she will actually loosen them. Previously she has held tighter restrictions than the minimum required by the state; for example, not reopening dining in at restaurants last time we reached Red Tier in October. And these additional restrictions announced in late November— some of which are not being relaxed yet. But starting today area restaurants are allowed to reopening dining in, although at a capacity limit of 25%. The risks are still high enough in my estimation that I'm not ready to return to eating in restaurants as a regular thing yet. For now I'll continue limiting my restaurant patronage to buying take-out about twice a week and either eating it outside (a plausible option as area weather has turned dry and warm the past few weeks) or bringing it home.
Update 3 Mar: The other restriction dating back to November has been lifted. Santa Clara County required all persons entering the county from more than 150 miles away to quarantine for 10 days. So many people I know said they were unaware of it and/or simply ignored it. But not us, biggest chumps. Now I'm free to plan a weekend road trip.
