Breaking Bad: The Murder Twins, part 2
Oct. 31st, 2024 03:40 pmThe Murder Twins, as I call them, are a pair of recurring minor characters in Breaking Bad's season 3. They're featured in 3 extended scenes in S3E1, as I outlined in a previous blog. They appear again in subsequent episodes, each appearance being just as creepy and sinister while also revealing more about their plans.
In S3E2 they arrive at an old folks' home. Former cartel leader Hector Salamanca now resides here. He's the guy who suffered a stroke and is mostly paralyzed and is only able to communicate by ringing a loud bell attached to the arm of his wheelchair. Have they come to kill him? No, they've come to... play a game?

The Murder Twins stride through the recreation room, past other doddering retirees, to a shelf of games. They rummage through the boxes and pick out Ouija. They set the Ouija board down in front of Hector and move the pointer until he rings the bell. Writing one letter at a time on a piece of note paper, they soon spell out WALTER WHITE.
Next we see the Murder Twins arrive by car at Walt's house. Walt is inside, alone, taking a shower. They enter the house. One of them is carrying a shiny axe in addition to their guns.

The Murder Twins sit on Walt's bed outside the bathroom where he's in the shower, singing. This possibly the most iconic picture-scene with the Murder Twins.
What's going to happen? How's Walt going to survive this? I mean, we all know he survives it because he's the main character and there are still dozens more episodes. 😅
Plot twist! The Murder Twins aren't the only ones who've been lurking around Walt's house today. Mike Ehrmantraut, Saul Goodman's fixer, is there, too.
Mike was installing a bug (listening device) in the house when Walt arrived home early, unexpectedly. Mike packed up his tools and snuck back to his car half a block away. He was listening by radio to Walt singing in the shower, testing that the bug works, when he saw the Murder Twins arrive. Mike makes a call on his cell phone. "You need to know about this," he says.
Moments later, one of the Murder Twins receives a message on his phone. It just says, "POLLOS". Chickens. Except that's the same one-word message Walt received from drug boss Gus Fring instructing him to come to Los Pollos Hermanos, a (fictitious) restaurant chain that Gus owns. The Murder Twins look at each other wordlessly, get up, and leave. Walt finishes his shower completely unaware he was ever seconds away from being murdered.
What's interesting about this scene is that it's our first clue that Mike's more than just the fixer for a shady lawyer. He works for the cartel and he's got a direct line to the guy running things in the US. That means the bug he planted isn't for shady lawyer Saul to make sure Walt isn't blabbing to his wife or family, like I thought at first; it's for the cartel to monitor what he's doing at home.
