As we hiked around a loop at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont (part 1, previous entry) we enjoyed views in all directions. The park's highest peak is only 292 ft. but even that towers over the waters of San Francisco Bay and the many miles of flat land in the valley around it.

To the west we could see straight across the bay to the ridges of the Santa Cruz Mountains beyond. To the south we could see the vast expanse of the south end of the San Francisco Bay. It's bigger than it looks on a map as much of what's rendered as land is actually marshes. Beyond those marshes is Silicon Valley, and beyond that are even more mountains... including, in the distance, the ever-present Mystery Cube atop Mt. Umunhum. Though it took sharp eyes to spot it as, from here, it's nearly 40 miles away!

Looking north you can see the miles of colorful evaporation ponds that ring the south end of the San Francisco Bay. 28 miles in the distance, yet visible in this photo, are the towers of San Francisco itself.

To the north we could see considerable expanses of the SF Bay, as well. Most of the bay is north of us here at this point. The photo above shows some of the colors of the evaporation ponds that reach out miles from the shore here in the South Bay. Off in the distance you can see the skyline of downtown San Francisco. It's nearly 30 miles away!
