What a difference a day makes. Yesterday my mother in law (MIL) was heartbroken over an unsettling recommendation from her cancer doctor to suspend treatment. She took some prescribed pain medication in the afternoon then had trouble waking up in the evening. Hawk, her father, and I were on the verge of calling 911 because she couldn't stay awake and couldn't form words into even short sentences. We did ultimately get her to get up, and we decided it wasn't an emergency. Today she's doing so much better. She's awake, alert, and able to communicate normally.

MIL and FIL are also feeling better about the recommendation from the oncologist. They're no longer interpreting his advice as wanting to stop treating her cancer permanently. Instead they're taking it as (1) continue pausing the treatment at least another 2 weeks. This allows time for a serious blood infection she's still suffering to clear up. She basically can't get chemotherapy while the infection's still present. Two weeks from now is her next followup with the doctor to assess if she's ready to restart chemo. And (2) the's doctor description of "If you stop treatment you'll have higher quality of life for 6 to 12 months" is informing her of her alternatives, part of what any good medical practitioner should do, and is not him saying, "I'm stopping treatment, you've got 6-12 months to live." MIL still very much wants to fight this cancer, aggressively.
