canyonwalker: Cheers! (wine tasting)
Spring Family Visit Travelog #7
Back at the house · Thu 2 Apr 2026. 10pm.

Last night we had Seder with family friends while visiting my inlaws. Visiting family for Passover was part of the point of this trip. The other part was just to visit family. But after we made our plans things happened. Hawk's mom, T., was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Thus the main point of the trip shifted to just being there with family. And helping out as much as we could.

T. practically chased us out of the house last night, though. She wasn't well enough to leave the house for Seder with friends across town but she didn't want to deprive us. And also she really wanted some alone time, at home.

Seder last night was good. We got there late, as usual, for a predictably poor reason, also as usual, so we missed socializing before the start of the readings and dinner. Basically everyone was waiting on us to sit down and start. There was plenty of socializing over dinner, though. Passover Seder generally is. As one of the guests quipped— there were 15 of us guests in addition to the two hosts— "Most Jewish celebrations are, 'They tried to kill us, We won, Let's eat!'" Everyone expressed their sorrow that T. was unable to join.

Today has been a quiet day around the house. Everyone's tired; T. most of all. Hawk and I thought we'd be here helping them clean up around the house, preparing to move out in probably a few months, but there's no energy for that. Her parents don't even have the energy to tell people what to do for them or to say "Keep this/trash that" as we clean things up.

This evening Hawk and I pulled together a dinner of leftovers. There was no Second Seder like in past years. T. is nowhere near well enough to host one as she's traditionally done for years, and the rest of us weren't inclined to accept the invitation from another family friend as that would mean leaving T. alone a second evening in a row. So we made a dinner of leftovers.

Why leftovers? It's because my inlaws have a lot of pack-rat tendencies. They're not hoarders by any means. In fact, their house is always tidy... in the common rooms, at least. The places where things get overgrown are the office, the basement, and the three refrigerators. Yes, a pair of elderly empty-nesters own three refrigerators. (Actually two refrigerators and a chest freezer.) And usually they are all jammed full. So tonight as part of our mission to help clean the house we helped clean out the fridge. 🤣

We pulled no fewer than five entrees plus various sides and heated, plated, and served them. There was plenty to go around. And while nothing was finished— we didn't expect any of it to be finished— we quietly threw out almost everything that was still left over. Some of the things we dug out of the fridge to serve didn't even make it to the table. With "best by" dates of months ago they went straight into the trash while nobody was looking. 🤐

By the way, tonight's leftovers party didn't clear the fridge. Oh, heavens, no. It merely cleared enough space for the next round of grocery shopping. 🤣
