People free to work at home flee pricey cities such as San Francisco, a common story in the news and conservative politics goes, for lower-tax locations like Texas and Florida. As much as it's been repeated the past several months it's become an article of faith; yet some have warned the data don't bear it out. So, where's the data? you might ask. Would you believe... the US Post Office.
The SF Chronicle published an article yesterday (updated 18 Feb 2021) with data from the USPS showing where SF households moved to. The top destination is not Austin, Miami, Denver, or even Portland. It's Alameda, the county across the bay from SF. The #2 destination? San Mateo County, SF's neighbor immediately to the south.

In fact 7 of the top 10 destinations for people filing change-of-address records in SF were other locales in the metro area. The top 15 are all in California. Only three of the top 20 were anywhere outside the state. Travis County, Texas, home of the fabled Austin? Only 239 moves there, vs. #1 Alameda's 8,131.
Suck it, Texas liars.
