canyonwalker: Hangin' in a hammock (life's a beach)

"I want to spend the day outside," Hawk said about Sunday after we spent much of the day Saturday gaming, inside. I agreed, and we identified two outside things we could do today: go hiking at Las Trampas near Mt. Diablo (we last hiked there over a year ago) or spend all day at the pool. Hiking would depend on getting up early enough to beat the heat. Temps were forecasted to be above 90 around Mt. Diablo in the afternoon, so we'd want to get there to start hiking by, say, 9am to finish up around 11:30 or noon.

Well, good news/bad news. Bad news: we didn't get up early enough to want to hike Las Trampas before it got too hot. Good news: we could spend the hot part of the day instead at the pool in our condo complex.

Enjoying the pool and the pool deck (Jul 2023)

We took it easy indoors in the morning, went out for lunch at a local favorite restaurant with great patio dining, then changed into our swim suits and headed back out for the pool. We swam in the pool together for a while, then I switched over to the hot tub for a soak, then back to the pool for a bit, then out to dry off. Hawk stayed in the main pool through all of this. The photo above shows her still in the water while I'm taking it easy in a chaise lounge chair.

We came prepared to spend several hours outdoors at the pool. Knowing not all of that time would be in the water we packed to sit for a bit. I brought my phone and laptop; Hawk brought her phone and table. We staked out a table with an umbrella and a few chairs over in a shady corner with a beautiful trellis behind us on two sides. Oh, and I brought a refreshment....

Enjoying the pool and the pool deck... with a beer (Jul 2023)

It's a can of the Summer Ale I enjoyed at ShaKa Brewery in Sunnyvale on Friday. I bought two cans of that variety to take home figuring that they'd taste great sitting outdoors on a warm summer afternoon. Now that the 113 days of March weather are over, seemingly decisively so, there should be plenty of warm summer afternoons coming at us. And indeed, the gently tart fruit flavors in this beer made it a great sipper in the shade.

After the beer I rehydrated with some water then went back into the pool for another swim. Hawk had already popped out to relax in the shade. I asked her to come back in the water with me, but she was getting a headache. I swam for a bit longer while she rested to see if she could shake it off. Unfortunately her headache wasn't going away so I toweled off and we headed back home together around 5:30.

So, technically speaking it wasn't "all day" at the pool as we were out there only a little over 3 hours. But it sure was a great way to spend a summer afternoon!
