Could We Be a One-Car Family?
Mar. 10th, 2026 12:27 pm"Could we be a one-car family?" I mused today as I went out to lunch. For the past several weeks we effectively have been. Hawk and I do a lot of things together. If we go out for dinner, we both go together. When we go shopping, often we both go together. She's even started joining me for lunches out together since I retired a few weeks ago.
It's literally been weeks since we had both of our cars rolling at the same time. But there's a huge reason for that beyond "Because I"m retired now" or even "Because we spend time together". It's because Hawk has been recovering from foot surgery. She can't drive. ...Oh, she probably could, for a short bit, if she had to. Like, if it was an emergency. But fortunately no situation like that has arisen.
Hawk may start easing back into driving herself later this week. She's seeing the orthopedist tomorrow for a followup. He'll review a fresh set of x-rays, and Hawk expects he'll say she's clear to start putting weight on her toes again.
Update: Keep reading in part 2!
