canyonwalker: My other car is a pair of hiking boots (in beauty I walk)
Last weekend I visited Robb's Hut in the Eldorado National Forest. It's one of those things you probably wouldn't find except for SMUD's nice map of the Crystal Basin. Getting to Robb's Hut, which is an old cabin next to a fire lookout atop a peak, entails a drive of about 3 miles up a 4x4 route then hoofing it for the last .5 to .6 miles past a locked gate.

For this chapter of the trip I've prepared both a video and a few pictures. Watch the video in the frame below or click through it to see it in 1280x720p resolution.

Once past the locked gate, on foot, it was both easy and tough going to the top. Easy, because the road is still a dirt fire/access road. But also tough, because it's up-up-up to a summit of almost 6,700' (2,042 m) and I don't have any acclimation to the altitude. Thankfully he views along the way provide ample excuses to stop and catch one's breath while appreciating the scenery.

On the Road to Robb's Hut (Jul 2023)

Initially I misremembered this trail as being 1/4 mile on foot. Nope, it's more like 0.6 miles (1km). But hey, I need the exercise. 😅

Soon enough the peak comes into view.

Fire Lookout atop Robb's Peak (Jul 2023)

The photo above shows the fire lookout. That's not actually Robb's Hut. The hut is just below it on the far side.

From atop the fire lookout there are views in all directions. To the west, you can see across the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to the California's Central Valley. It was hazy when I visited, though, so I didn't try taking photos. They wouldn't have come out well. To the east are views up into the Crystal Range of the Sierra Nevada, as shown in the previous picture. Beyond the Crystal Range is the Desolation Wilderness and Lake Tahoe.

After our drive/hike to Robb's Hut atop a nearly 7,000' peak we discussed what to do next. Actually I was the only one to hike to the top of the peak; Hawk waited in the car at the locked gate 1/2 mile down from the top. She'd been up half the night with stomach pains (*not exactly stomach but I'll leave it at that for simplicity) and ran out of energy after our hike at Bassi Falls. Yes, hiking Bassi Falls was an act of vengeance— one that her body fought back against. It's like, "If I can't get you with a torn muscle I'mma get you with extreme GI pain."

While we evaluated whether we had enough time and energy to do one more hike in the area we temporized with visiting a little set of waterfalls off the side of the road.

Roadside Falls on Tells Creek in the Crystal Basin (Jul 2023)

I believe this is Tells Creek— or at least that's my best guess from the beautiful but too often misleading SMUD map. I made the photo above from the edge of the road bridge over the creek. Hawk picked her way down the embankment and hiked under the bridge. She didn't have enough energy to scramble up the rocks to stand by one of those alluring pools in the picture.

Once we were both back at the car we decided discretion would be the better part of valor. Not only was Hawk very iffy on the prospect of doing another hike, but I figured that if we drove over to Horsetail Falls for even a short hike (it's maybe a 1.5 mile loop IIRC) it'd push back our arrival at the night's hotel by over 2 hours. Yes, that was our Saturday Night Halfway. We decided getting in at, say, 7:30pm was preferable to arriving at 10— especially with another full day planned for Sunday.
