"Gas is cheap in Hawaii." Those are five words I thought I'd never say. But here we are. As we've been driving around a lot the past two days— over 150 miles, which is a lot for being on an island that's only 44 miles across at its widest point— we've passed a lot of gas stations. I've observed a typical price of $5.09 ~ $5.19 per gallon for base grade unleaded gasoline. Similar name-brand stores back home in California recently have been charging $5.99 ~ $6.09.

Why is gas in Hawaii now cheaper than California? I don't know. California gas prices surged 20% in a week after Russia's invasion of Ukraine triggered global oil price increases. Gas prices almost everywhere else in the US rose, too. But Hawaii seems to have experienced much less of an increase due to the global oil shocks.
