The season 3 finale of The Mandalorian continued the season's unfortunate trend of weak, amateurish writing. It's like the writers know what the conclusion to each episode needs to be but aren't sure how to get there given the various side plots and characters in play, so they just jam it all together with eye-rollingly obvious leaps of faith over glaring plotholes. Fortunately, as with the previous episode, the story in this episode was compelling enough to enjoy despite the missteps.
In this episode the Mandalorians decide they need to attack Moff Gideon's base en masse to boot him off planet Mandalore. Well, maybe they decided that last episode, but this episode is when they do it. Of course, Gideon is trying to destroy them at the same time. ðą They send their ships down to the surface for an attack on the base while Gideon sends his ships into space to destroy the Mandalorians' flag ship— which, by that point, they've left up there as a decoy with only a brave captain aboard.
While the Mandalorian warriors are attacking the base and drawing most of the stormtrooper guards, Mando and Grogo are already off trying to find Gideon for a one-on-one duel. Except Gideon knows they're coming for him. We see that he's able to track them on a map of his lair. He tells the camera he's going to ambush them... but then he lets them fight their way into his inner sanctum, taking out a bunch of his guards and destroying all his clones before he's like, "Ahaha, I've got you where I want you!"
If I were him, "where I want you" would be before you traipse through my secret lab and destroy all my clones. ð Also, if I were the evil genius bad guy, my secret clone lab would not have a "destroy all the clones I've spent 10 years and millions of credits producing" button that any do-gooder who stumbled in could find and press. ðĪŠ
Mando and Gideon get into their epic fight. Grogu gets chased by Gideon's praetorian guards. Mando tries to protect him, splitting his attention between the two combats. Mando takes a beating so he runs around the corner. He runs around the corner and he's... back out on the landing platform where everyone's fighting. Wow, he sure took the long way around to find Gideon's inner sanctum, which was right next to the landing pad the whole time. ð
Being out in the open means Bo-Katan can join the fight. You knew that was going to happen because (a) she has special enmity with him and (b) she has the Darksaber. Well, Gideon is pretty powered up with his mecha-Beskar steel suit, so he grinds them down and destroys the Darksaber. But then here comes Axe Woves, Bo-Katan's right-hand man, Kamikaze piloting a the flagship at the landing pad. Earth shattering kaboom!
The good guys all survive. Well, the main characters anyway. Axe ejected before the ship went critical. Grogu made a force shield to protect himself, Mando, and Bo-Katan from the explosion. Gideon was incinerated... or was he? The show leaves just enough room for him to reappear in a later season or sequel.
Speaking of later season or sequel, the episode ends with Mando announcing he needs to take Grogu on adventures to learn The Way of Mandalore. He meets Republic Captain Teva and offers to do missions as a privateer. This sets the stage for either an episodic season 4 or a related spinoff involving other characters from the Star Wars universe.
