canyonwalker: Hangin' in a hammock (life's a beach)

It was another mostly quiet weekend here around the aerie. There was stuff to do; we didn't just sit home like slugs (yay?), but the stuff we did wasn't what I'd hoped for.

The main stumbling block between desire and reality was Hawk's leg injury from the previous weekend. That took off the table any plans for more than a relatively short, level walk outdoors.

The second stumbling block was the continued unseasonably cool weather. After I joked in my blog about how the weather's like the 85th day of April, the SF Chronicle made a similar joke in a Friday article about yet-another cold weekend. Cold for us is 71° when it should be 82. Cold for SF is that they haven't seen the temperature even hit 70 the whole month of June so far. The cold weather, and the heavy fog along the coast that tends to comes with it, led to us canceling our plans to walk the beach cliffs in Santa Cruz on Saturday morning. 59° and overcast doesn't shout "Beach weather!"

So, what did we do instead? One, we walked around the neighborhood here— where at least the weather is spring-time pleasant if not yet summery warm. Two, we went shopping! We'd started looking to replace our mattress the weekend before. On Saturday we tried two more stores. Long story short, we found a mattress that we liked and bought it. I'll write more about the shopping saga separately.

Saturday evening Hawk had a dinner date with a college friend in town from the East Coast. I considered going on a hike by myself in the afternoon, something beyond Hawk's current ability. I have trouble finding motivation to hike on my own, though. Hawk is my ride or die. I mean, I can hike on my own. I've done it before. The last time was... 2017. I took the excuse that it was getting a little too late in the afternoon after our shopping trip. To be fair, it was getting kind of late actually.

Sunday we spent the day visiting friends. I've written before about our friend, Del, who's dying of cancer, and his family. ...As I wrote out the next few paragraphs I saw that it was getting pretty dark and heavy, so I'm going to move it to its own post. I want to keep this post lighter.

Sunday evening we relaxed at home. We watched another few episodes of the last season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. We've got two episodes left now. We could've binged through them all last night, but I felt it'd be more enjoyable to spread them out a bit. Two, hour-long shows at a time seems like an optimal pace.
