California Turning Orange (In A Good Way)

It's Tier Tuesday in California. That means another weekly update from the state with newly calculated risk categories for each of the state's 58 counties. This week continues the trend of improvement, with lots of orange in the map:

Now just over 80% of the state's population are in Orange Tier. That's an improvement from being 50% orange one week ago... with the other 50% red or worse. Not to mention 3 weeks ago when the state was 88% red and that was a good thing because it was still better than being mostly purple. Yay, continued improvement.
This puts into better context the governor's announcement today that he hopes to retire the risk assignment system and end Covid limitations in California by June 15. When I first saw that news headline I wondered, "Is the governor succumbing to political pressure and announcing an arbitrary, feel-good date?" The details in the announcement— that the date is an estimate and policy changes will continue to be driven by evidence— plus these improving figures make me cautiously optimistic calling the lockdown done by June 15 will be a reality.
