Day 9 of this Freakin' Cold

canyonwalkerI'm now in Day 9 of this freakin' cold. ...No, I'm not grousing about the weather. This is about how being sick sucks.
I started developing cold symptoms Sunday afternoon the week before last. At first the symptoms were mild and I thought they might pass in 24-48 hours. Yes, I've had some cases where colds are really mild and cycle through quickly like that. But at the 24 hours mark it took a turn for the worse with shakes and chills.
That's probably the worst of it, I thought the next morning when the shakes had subsided. I should be over the rest of it in another day or two, I thought, ever the optimist. ...Again, my experience the past several years has been getting over colds quickly. I've usually gotten through the main symptoms in about 4 days, if not fewer.
Not this cold. It stuck with me through all last week. I dosed myself with various over-the-counter medicines to reduce down the symptoms. I kept thinking, "Okay, this feels like the last day of it," but Nope. Still sick the next day.
The most annoying symptom of this cold is a really tough cough. It feels like there's thick mucus stuck in my lungs, or maybe at the back of my throat. I try to cough it out but it just won't come out. That means I go into strong coughing fits trying to clear it out. None of the OTC meds help much with this specific symptom.
Today the symptoms have most subsided, including that dratted cough. It's not gone but it's at least a lot milder. Optimist me would say this is the last day of it. Optimist me is recalibrating his opinions, though, based on the new facts of how hard this cold has hit. This is the worst cold I can remember having in at least 15 years, maybe longer.
Update, Feb. 10: The cough stuck with me for another few days after I posted this blog. This cold turned out to be a 12-13 day cycle, definitely the worst I've had in many years.
