I'm in Las Vegas for a few days for my company's annual sales kickoff (SKO). I've quipped before that these events are marathons, not sprints. One has to pace oneself because SKOs a few days of long meetings— death by powerpoint—plus long evenings, potentially very long evenings, of curricular and extracurricular activities. Hit it too hard one day and you may not have stamina left for the rest.

I came close to overdoing it yesterday. And yesterday was only Day 0! I knocked back a decent number of drinks at the reception then retired to one of the bars in the casino with two sales colleagues for another few rounds. We went back to our rooms around midnight. That's not stupid-late, of course. I have colleagues who stayed out until 2-3am. But I went to bed with maybe 1 stiff drink more than I should have had. I was worried I'd wake up sick or with a hangover.

I think what saved me was waking up several times during the night, briefly, and drinking water from a bottle I left at my bedside. My 6:45am alarm felt like it came too soon, but I was able to get myself out of bed— and without feeling ill or hungover. And today, Day 1, I made it through the sessions— which ran from 7:45am until nearly 6pm— without trouble.

There's another reception/party tonight. There will, of course, be freely flowing booze at it. And several colleagues who'd like to take me out for extracurriculars afterward. I'm going to try keeping a tighter rein on myself tonight. If I don't... well, Day 2's going to suck.
