Makaha Beach

Makaha, Oahu, HI - Sun, 10 Apr, 2022, 12:30pm
We finished up our visit to Pearl Harbor when the day was still young— 10am, the benefit of having gotten an early start. Next we drove back up the west side of Oahu, where we'd seen a number of amazing beaches yesterday on our trip to/from Ka'ena point. Well, one of those beaches, Nanakuli Beach, we'd already visited. That left only 2-3 more great looking ones to choose from.
We picked Makaha Beach, far up on the west side. Here the highway that started as H1, 10 lines wide, has changed designation to state route 93 has narrowed all the way down to 2 lanes. High rise hotels and condos have long since given way to scruffy strip malls and individual homes in small towns.

Out here in the sticks there's no less natural beauty. In fact there's arguably more, because there are fewer people around who might mess it up. Makaha beach had plenty of soft sand, shallow water, nice waves, and wasn't packed shoulder-to-shoulder like Waikiki Beach.
BTW, the north end of the beach shown in the picture above was the "busy" end. The southern half of the beach had all of about 3 people on it. And this is at noon, not 6am.

Over on the crowded half of the beach, people were pointing at turtles in the water. Even in the shallows they were just dark lumps that could've been rocks for all I knew. As we walked down the to the southern half of the beach, we found a turtle sharing the warm sun and sand with us. ...No, this is not a dead turtle. That was my first thought, too, sadly. But this guy/gal is very much alive. I could see it breathing. And spitting out water with a miffed look on its face each time a big wave washed over it.

Makaha Beach is scenic not just because of the water and barely spoiled sand but also because of the beauty behind it. In the first picture you can see a rocky bluff that comes up hard against the road and the shore. Behind us the whole time (as we face the water, anyway) are these steep mountains forming Oahu's western spine. In beauty we walk.
