We set a new record shopping today at Costco. We spent almost $630 on one trip. That's more than double our old max. And if I count in an online Costco order that arrived today, we're at nearly $900, more than triple our next biggest one-day haul!

What's even crazier about us spending that much on one Costco trip is that there's no big-ticket item in the mix. We didn't buy a TV, a microwave oven, or a piece of furniture. We didn't buy a large package of meat. Heck, we didn't buy any meat. (Meat adds up fast when a typical package is 4+ pounds, especially if you're buying the good stuff which can run over $100/package.) Okay, there was booze that helped add up... but 3 big bottles of liquor and case of beer contributed just under 1/4 the total.

No, this was a trip where we filled our cart with lots of smaller stuff. Even filling the cart felt crazy. While we see plenty of other Costco shoppers with overflowing carts at the checkout line, we usually have a single layer in the bottom of our cart. Today for the first time we were the ones with a stuffed cart... mostly full up top, with a cardboard display box full of more stuff underneath by the wheels. If we were to add in the box that arrived via UPS, we could've nearly filled two carts.

What did we get for all that? A lot of it is things we bought in multiples. Hawk bought 28 packages of a cookie she likes because Costco doesn't always have them in stock. (Maybe because somebody else buys them 28 bags at a time, too. 🤣) She bought 6 bags of another candy for the same reason. We agreed on buying 3 cases (36 boxes!) of mac & cheese in a brand we like. Costco hasn't stocked it for a few months, but today they did and it was on sale. The mail order delivery was 15 boxes of heat patches Hawk uses regularly. They were on sale, so we bought the max. Beyond that were another half dozen onesy-twosy items to round out the trip.

Because of the sheer bulk of stuff we brought home we had to rearrange things to fit. We rearranged the freezer. We rearranged the fridge. We rearranged things on the pantry shelves. We even rearranged things on the overflow shelves in the garage.

While we bought what seems like a ridiculous amount of food today, both in cost and sheer bulk, we're confident it's not going to go to waste. Nearly everything we bought is an item we've eaten & enjoyed before. Only one thing was, "Hey, that looks good, let's try it." And we considered how fast we use things up vs. their expiry dates to make sure nothing will get thrown away for going stale.

Now excuse me, I've got some dinner to cook, from items in a very full kitchen! 😂

Update: Just a week later we spent another $500+ at Costco! Again it was all little stuff, but again stocking up on items not available year-round. With this purchase we decided it's worth keeping Costco Executive Membership another year.
