Could We Be a One-Car Family, Part 2
Mar. 10th, 2026 08:49 pmEarlier today I mused over the question, Could We Be a One-Car Family? Though we've effectively been a one-car family for the last several weeks it's really because we've been a one-driver family due to Hawk's recovery from foot surgery. Once she's better there'll be times when we're both driving different places and we'll want two cars.
It remains a worthwhile thought experiment, though. Especially with both of us retired now there are far fewer occasions when we both need cars to do different things at the same time. But those occasions still will arise. One thing that's been important to us in our relationship from its start decades ago is that we maintain a variety of separate solo activities/interests in addition to the things we do and enjoy together. And while it won't be every day of the week that we're driving to different places at the same time, I think once we get back into the swing of things it'll be a few times a week.
Could we be a one-car family if we needed to? Sure, if we needed to, say because of physical inability or financial constraints. I don't expect finances to be the reason anytime soon, if ever. Besides, both of our cars are paid off, so right now the main cost difference of having two instead of one is the cost of insurance.
But here's the other thing. Even if we almost never drove separately, we still like having the two kinds of cars we own right now. One's a sporty convertible, which we love for driving around locally and on many road trips. The other's a 4x4 SUV, which we love having for when we go hiking and camping at places well beyond the end of paved roads.
